Lessons are learnings of failings and successes, gains and losses, a series of perceptions and perspectives of actions rendered funneled into usefulness. It is a core of creation, especially when the work originates with the forums created from the reactions of the oppressed. Reactions into retaken crates, reshapen tables and now reawakened rhymes, a special music that when sold are the sounds of ignorance and intelligence clashing, one part dying. Which one? Who fucking knows until we rewind or they rebuy his wretched or wrecking shit rehashing the next LP? Hip Hop, countercultural but it’s used for survival in the popular culture of the Man.
One of the gifts of the #DarkAges (2000’s) was the retreat of the underground into a cerebral cave where all shades got obsessed with the sound of the words and the oddity of the sample soundclashing. The EL-P’s of progressively odd scores to the J-Live’s of a deft, concept driven building. Some of these young MCs, you hear their sounds in others they decided are truly inspirational in a way that actually counters.
So when Astro Traveling 2 plays, I hear Mr. Lif’s baritone and inflected clarity, the Madlib embrace of unlimited sampling bliss, the Doom sensibilities for word plays into the staging of a great cult character. I knowledge this Canadian brother, K-HAM CA, developing, still in flux and still excited to love this music. An extreme slow flow, delivering in articulate fashion, an enunciation that inflects right on the snares often as on “Paprika.”
The brother Black but like so many there is almost a new angst. An angst of depression, maybe that this shit is ending, it ain’t changing and what else can be done but just make more ill shit. Early, it seems we came immersed in our just mere survival of this ghetto shit, whatever class, po’ or middle, but it was the price of the racists’ ass, daily struggles or full blown revolution we decide upon. But I’m still learning on my young brothers and K-HAM ponders in a state with so much more to come…“Recollected memories still connected of a young youth with a style of the reckless…I see more than I say so my mind show a bunch of stacked thoughts on display” (“T&T”). His voice is slowed to a lower bpm to lazily flow through “Checkpoint” or flow brisker on “Stepping Stones” where he “brainstorms how to flip real from a dream.” The flux of finding oneself, one’s peak, one’s ease in all things from this youth is well captured because it’s a consistent theme K-HAM’s catalog. Musically, sharpness is the production style and the snares snap furiously crisp and the breaks drag and hover with muted horns of the Bopped eras as on “Lush” or digital bleeps and rampaging bassline waves of horror cringe past the exploding cymbals on “AT2.”
K-HAM CA is done a disservice to label him just yet as a progressive nerd in the new Black angst or one of the mere children of madvillainy. His techniques are not easy to perform, his word usage and cadences are well chosen and engaging, respectively. His tracks are well dug for and have a complete palette of reference to say anything in any new way he chooses to. I’ll be doing the knowledge to the choices K-HAM CA continues to make…
#LOVEandLOYALTY A #LoLife
The organization of these principles around a counterculture, an expressive arts of creation that uplifts the ideas and thoughts of an oppressed people, is why I’m an honored builder amongst legends, knighted by heroes of Medina (Rakim Supreme Shabazz Allah/Rudy Lo, Thirstin Howl the 3rd, Bonz Malone) to further create in my element as a Hip Hop Writer of #ArtOnArt & #ScienceOnMusic. So the world may find love that locks in with the action of loyalty though they may never find another writer with my kind of grammar…
