Selling hell on a backbeat. Blues with a smile to crews sprayed on a wall. Are these all records of the peoples’ lives, thoughts, hopes and greatest ideas in palettes of dynamic innovation and honored preservation? Most of the time it ain’t because #RespectFAKE is the mean and the way is rare whilst the burgeoning ill is an anomaly.
So these are the problems, problems, problems of the Art today…In this capitalist hell where Black capital is the fuel and racism is the trigger. And not the niche of go-by-figgas niggas and wiggas but us obsessors of that fucking quality, the tough stuff. We revel in the stories of the common man and often to the extreme hustle, violent to righteous, back to violent–damn! And we will still root for them cause their words rhyme in a precision.
Precision John, enveloped in teflon shaped drums by Cuns throughout Teflon John, hustles words in perfectly syllable matched lines. It lets mid-tempo thumpers like “Teflon Manteca” with its consistent bu-bump hit his bars, melodic gliding. “Official” plucking strings sound like a transition score from an 80’s crime film and so is the near cliche chorus. However, the verses are thrust with soul. Jigg$ isn’t setting marks with massively new ideas but this is a declarative work. He’s fucking here and the blared guitar on the bottomed drum on “Brick” and JIgg$ slickly reasserts his focus in this new competition of the indu-streets. The peak of Teflon John is “2096” where the beat plods through thick snow and PF Cuttin does his namesake expertly and Jigg$ flies through similes in battle bars.
Good Friday, three months later, another quick Jigg$ hit, teaming with Long Island brethren DJ Concept on production. An excellent diversity in tempos such as the slow flow with the master slow flowa SmooVth, on “Deer Season” with some excellent pictorial details. The title track hits with a piano with drum smash and Jigg$ nicely stutters his punchlines to fit the smacks. Then the upper mid tempo, stringed break, his heart spills all over “One King” with fury. Good Friday is such an elevation from Teflon John that a Long Player taken with the care he rhymed with can become something essential.
So let that brother pistolate over those that pontificate…spelling the namesake with the hell symbol at the end cause maybe another purchase will exchange us some worth before we bleed out.
